FAQ

1. What are the limits for the LED light changes?

The factory settings is that Green light is up to 30 litres, yellow and orange 30-50 litres and finally red after 50 litres. Note that you can freely change the targets and LED light functionality from the app.

2. What are the growing sidebars around the display indicating?

The bars are connected to the green area of the LED light, meaning that the bars form the full circle when your consumption reaches 30 litres and the green light changes into yellow.

3. Do I need to always upload the data to the mobile app after my showering?

No, the hand shower can save up to 200-300 showers in its internal memory, so it is enough to upload data for example once a week to the mobile app.

4. How big savings can be reached with the real-time feedback?

We have done lot of studies with real-time feedback. Based on the results of the studies, the shower water consumption goes down by on average 22%. Calculated average savings per year are then 645 kWh and 10,500 litres for a 3-person household (Study with 600 households in Central-Europe*)

If we use the average water price in Europe of 2.5eur/m3 and average electricity price of 0.21 eur/kWh (incl. taxes). Then with above annual savings with 3-person household we get around 160eur! (2.5eur/m3 x 10.5m3 + 0.21eur/kWh x 645kWh= 162eur)

5. Can you connect the same hand shower into several mobile apps at the same time?

Yes, you can. Just remember to connect and configure the hand shower by one person/ app at the time.

6. Can you connect the same app into several hand showers at the same time?

Basically yes, but you need to create separate user accounts per digital hand shower. Meaning that to switch to see the data from the other hand shower, you need to log out from the app and sign-in with the different account to the other hand shower. We are developing function that helps you to easily switch between the accounts without logging off.

7. Do you have a patent for the product?

Our patent protection includes the combination of energy harvesting and measuring turbine together with the method to better calculate the energy contained in the water and method to increase the precision of the measurement.

8. Where is it manufactured?

In western Finland in a city called Rauma.

9. Is your product ecological?

Yes, this is the core idea of the product – it contributes to the sustainability throughout the life cycle of usage. During the design process, special attention was paid to reducing the weight of the injection molded parts. We only use relatively unproblematic standard plastic material like PPE and ABS. Also the product package is plastic free, only cardboard used.

10. How much water do people use in the shower on average?

Typical individual in our sample uses 45 liters of hot water (600 households from Central Europe), which requires on average 2.6 kWh to heat it up (for comparison, the average household in the European Union uses 1.0 kWh for lighting per day (Lapillonne et al. 2015, Prognos 2015), and a modern refrigerator uses 0.63 kWh per day (Michel et al. 2015)). Thus, showering is a highly resource-intensive activity.

11. How is the energy consumption calculated inside the hand shower?

The energy consumption displayed (in kWh) is an indication of the amount of heat contained in the consumed water. The energy consumption is calculated from the measured water volume and the measured water temperature (water quantity x temperature difference to reference temperature x heating capacity). The temperature difference is calculated as difference between the measured water temperature in the shower and a cold water temperature reference. This reference differs from region to region. For central Europe, the reference temperature is 12°C. The calculation of the energy consumption includes an assumed efficiency of the used heating system of 65%. This covers losses in the heating process and during transferring the hot water from the heating source to the extraction point.

12. Do I need to have the water running when connecting and uploading my data from Digital Hand Shower to the mobile app?

Yes, the hand shower gets the power only from the water flow since there is no batteries, but don´t worry – it only takes some seconds to get the data, so very limited amount of water is wasted.

13. Is the product/construction watertight?

Yes, the product is watertight.

14. One minute in the shower corresponds to the energy consumption of lamps in an average household per day. How is this calculated?

  1. Using old 60W light bulbs (incandescent lamps phased out since 2009 in EU) and 0,656 kWh per household in a day for lighting
    1. 5 lamps could be used 2h each during the day to provide lighting with 0.656 kWh = 656 Wh
    2. Calculation: 60W x 5pcs x 2h = 600 Wh
  2. LED: Using 8W LEDs and 0,656 kWh per household in a day for lighting (NOTE: 8W LED light has about the lighting power similar to the 60W old light bulb lamp)
    1. 5 LED lamps could be used 16h each during the day to provide lighting with 0.656 kWh i.e. one could basically leave the main lights on for a full day (excluding 8h of sleeping)
    2. Calculation: 8W x 5pcs x 16h = 640 Wh
